Welcome to the Home of the Rangers!

Welcome to the online home of Northwest Area School District. NASD is a small, rural district located in Shickshinny, Luzerne County, approximately 16 miles southwest of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The district has been in existence since 1955 when several smaller schools combined to form Northwest Area.

Today, Northwest Middle and High School is a comprehensive high school, serving approximately 500 students in grades 7–12. NASD Primary School, located in Huntington Mills, houses our PK–2 students, and our 3–6 graders are at the NASD Intermediate School in Hunlock Creek.

A Message from Our Superintendent

Dear Northwest Area Families and Community,

Thank you for your cooperation, flexibility, and support as we, the administrative team, try to traverse through this extraordinary time in education.

The Department of Education (PDE) announced today that all schools in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will remain closed through at least Monday, April 6. The closure order could be extended beyond, if necessary, to stop the spread of this virus.

Under this new order, schools would reopen on April 7 and April 8 to allow administration and teachers to prepare for the continuation of school. Students would return to school on April 9, unless the governor extends the closure.

The administration and teaching staff, in conjunction with PDE and the Luzerne Intermediate Unit, are continuing to plan for learning opportunities for our students.

Lunches will continue to be distributed to any interested students from noon to 1:00 p.m., Monday and Thursday at the four sites within our district.

Please continue to follow the guidance from the CDC and our state and local health agencies by practicing good hygiene and social distancing. Someday our lives will return to normalcy, and we look forward to seeing all of our students very soon.

Yours in education,

Joseph F. Long Jr.
Superintendent
